Do you know why Tulsi Puja is celebrated on 25 Dec? Tulsi is a well known plant in all parts of India. Planting a Tulsi plant in Hindu homes is considered very auspicious. Tulsi holds great importance, not only from religious, spiritual, and cultural viewpoints, but also from health and environment protection viewpoints. According to Sanatan scriptures, spiritual progress along with peace, happiness and prosperity come naturally to that house where there is a Tulsi plant. It gives many benefits like purity and cleanliness of the environment, eradication of pollution, and strengthening the health of the family. In 2014, the globally revered saint, Shri Asharamji Bapu, initiated Tulsi Pujan Diwas (a day to worship Tulsi) on 25th December, which has now become a worldwide festival.
According to several reports, from December 25 to January 1, there was an increase in animal slaughter, crimes, accidents, and suicides attributed to drug use and covetousness for pleasure in the name of celebrations. India's oldest Apex Chamber, The Associated Chambers of Commerce & Industry (ASSOCHAM) says in a survey report that during the period of December 25 to January 1, consumption of alcohol rises by 3 times. Even teenagers in the age of 14 to 19 years become enthusiastic consumers. The rise in crimes, accidents, rape cases, diseases, suicides obviously follow. Years after years this trend was growing & this was raising High Alarms & pain in well wishers of society, nation & humanity. In 2014, Sant Shri Asharamji Bapu initiated the Divine Tradition of Tulsi Pujan Diwas to be celebrated on 25th December & Vishwaguru Bharat Abhiyan to be celebrated till 1st January. It is the vision of this saint that the medicinal, spiritual, and environmental benefits of Tulsi shall bring widespread advantages to society.
Mother Tulsi holds a paramount place in Indian culture. Tulsi leaves are used in every good act by the Hindus, especially in offering Naivedya (the pious food) to the Lord. Lord Shri Krishna says in the Geeta that even if someone offers me only Tulsi leaf with love, I accept it with love. Tulsi has been referred to as a "wonder drug." Its consumption is beneficial in curing more than 800 types of diseases. Pujya Sant Shri Asharamji Bapu says:Jap and Dhyan performed in the vicinity of Tulsi yields manifold results. It is said that someone who wears a Tulsi mala around their neck is safe even from the servants of Yama, the god of death. Additionally, The ‘Skanda Purana’ states: “The servants of Yama do not come to his house in the vicinity of which there is a grove of Tulsi (where that plant is worshipped daily)”. According to the ‘Brahma Vaivarta Purana’ (Prakriti Khanda: 21.43), “When the water together with the Tulsi leaf is poured into the mouth of a dying man, he is relieved of all the sins and proceeds to the Vaikuntha (the abode of Lord Vishnu)”.
The increasing influence of Western culture and blind adherence to their festivals are steering people towards Western civilization, leading to societal degradation. In this context, Pujya Bapuji has rendered a service to society by initiating Tulsi Pujan Diwas, thereby guiding the mankind towards leading a healthy, happy and respectable life by availing the wonderful benefits of Tulsi; and beholding the same existence of God even in the trees, thus developing their divine feelings within. During these days, markets are inundated with items promoting blind superstitions, such as red hats, plastic artificial trees, and more. Shopping malls, shops, and markets in general, are adorned with these items to create a festival atmosphere. All of this is part of a marketing strategy to attract customers, especially children, by presenting these materials supporting above said superstitions vibrantly and colorfully. Moreover, according to the intellectuals, and reliable sources during the 25th December celebrations, consumption of various intoxicants including alcohol increases along with the degeneration of youth and increase in the incidence of suicide.
Inspired by Pujya Sant Shri Asharamji Bapu thousands of Shri Yoga Vedanta Seva Samitis, Bal Sanskar Kendras, Mahila Utthan Mandals, Youth Seva Sanghs, etc., have been promoting Tulsi Pujan Diwas on 25th December, both within the country and abroad, the celebrations for which commence almost a month before. Tulsi is an excellent antidepressant. It increases zest, agility and sattvikta (positive vibes) quality. Therefore, celebrating this festival during these days will prove a boon to the people at large. Numerous tales of the glory of Tulsi are found in several Vrata related legends, religious stories and the Puranas. No worship of Lord Vishnu or Krishna is considered complete without offering Tulsi leaves. Looking at the grand celebrations of Tulsi Puja Day every year, it becomes evident that Pujya Bapuji's vision to make India the Vishwaguru (Global Superpower) is on the verge of realization. Salutations to Tulsi Mata, who enhances energy, intelligence, and patience.
